Is Your Cosmetic Product Compliant with FDA Regulations?

Updated: Dec 18, 2024

Have you heard about the changes that occurred at the FDA for the cosmetics industry? Since 2023, the cosmetics industry has faced new obligations under the FDA. Among the necessary steps, three stand out: ingredient listing, label transparency and accuracy, and adherence to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) programs.

FDA Regulations

Listing ingredients with the FDA aims to control the quality of such ingredients by ensuring they are manufactured with consistency and accuracy. As a cosmetic brand informs the FDA of the ingredients in its products, it becomes responsible for any adverse effects caused by those ingredients. For new ingredients in the market, the FDA will determine whether they are approved for human use.

Another important step is label transparency, which helps consumers make informed choices based on their personal preferences. Transparency is especially important for consumers who prefer natural or vegan products or those free of parabens, sulfates, or other unwanted ingredients, thereby promoting consumer trust in the brand. It’s important to remember that claims like "treats acne" or "cures eczema" could classify the product as a drug, requiring stringent FDA approval.

Finally, adhering to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) programs is another vital aspect. GMP involves systems of processes, procedures, and documentation that ensure products are consistently produced and controlled to meet quality standards. This includes maintaining a clean manufacturing environment, proper equipment maintenance, and regular audits. Adhering to GMP reduces the risk of contamination and ensures the product’s safety and consistency.

Implementing these practices not only ensures compliance with FDA standards but also improves brand reputation and builds consumer trust. Still have questions? Contact us! Margareth Rossini
