Understanding and interpreting the ingredients on your cosmetic labels goes beyond choosing a product that suits your skin type. Today, it's fair to say that understanding cosmetics is closely tied to personal and ideological lifestyle choices. Terms like “natural” and “organic” don’t go unnoticed by those who adopt a conscious, wellness-driven lifestyle.

In the United States, the terms "natural" and "organic" must adhere to consistent safety and labeling rules, regardless of the product's origin. This means that all labels must be accurate and not misleading to the consumer. However, the FDA has not yet officially defined the term “natural” nor created specific regulations for its use. Similarly, the FDA does not directly regulate the use of the term "organic" in cosmetics.
Nevertheless, the term "organic" is regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the context of agricultural products, including ingredients used in cosmetics. The USDA defines "organic" as products derived from approved methods that integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices, promoting resource cycling, ecological balance, and biodiversity conservation. For a cosmetic product to be labeled “organic,” it must contain at least 95% organically produced ingredients according to National Organic Program (NOP) standards. Products with less than 95% organic content may use the term "organic," but only to identify specific organic ingredients, not the entire product.
Understanding these rules is crucial for meeting the expectations of a growing, conscious, and demanding market, which drives the continued growth of the Natural and Organic Cosmetics industry, reflecting a significant shift in market and consumer preferences.
